Grand Island, Neb. – A record breaking performance tops the list of this week’s Victory Sports Network NAIA Football Players of the Week.

Mike Maher of Saint Xavier University set a school record for touchdown receptions while having an exceptional output as a wide receiver for the Cougars.
Here is a complete breakdown of the players of the week by the Victory Sports Network.

The Victory Sports Network has named this week’s players of the week.

Wide Receiver Mike Maher is this week’s Victory Sports Network offensive player of the week. Maher, a 5-10, 185 lbs., senior wide receiver from Plainfield, Ill., led No. 4 ranked Saint Xavier to a 49-32 season-opening win over Bethel (Tenn.). He hauled in 12 receptions for 214 yards and four touchdowns in the game. His four touchdown receptions tied the SXU record for touchdown receptions in a game (4) joining SXU Hall of Famer Ed Bryant (’05) who set the mark against McKendree University (Ill.) in 1998. Maher caught passes from Anthony Kropp to record the first two touchdowns of the game and give SXU a 14-0 lead. The four touchdown receptions for Maher totaled distances of 5, 30, 11 and 70 yards. Maher was part of an offense that gained 532 yards on the night.

Defensive Back Colton Miller is this week’s Victory Sports Network defensive player of the week. Miller, a 6-2, 205 lbs., senior defensive back from Largo, Fla. recorded 10 tackles (8 solo) in No. 24 Baker’s 24-14 loss to No. 9 Ottawa. He also had 3.5 tackles for loss, two pass breakups and one interception, which he returned for 58 yards. Miller intercepted Jake Johnson’s pass at the Baker six yard line to stop a scoring opportunity for the Braves. The play set up the Wildcat offense on a potential scoring drive, but the field goal attempt was wide to the right.

Kicker Kenny Zoeller was named this week’s Victory Sports Network’s special teams player of the week. Zoeller, a 6-1, 170 lbs., sophomore kicker from Spring, Tex., connected on two field goals and made an extra point to lead Concordia (Neb.) to a 13-7 upset of No. 22 Peru State. He kicked a 27-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give the Bulldogs a 10-7 lead. Zoeller added a 42-yard field goal in the third quarter to extend the Concordia lead to six points. Before the win, the Bulldogs had not won a season-opening road game since 2003. CU defeated Doane College in Crete, Neb. 21-17. Concordia has not won its season opener since 2007, a 36-23 victory over Briar Cliff.
